Forum personal phone for the Mercury Callpoint ‘Telepoint’ mobile, or cordless, telephone system, grey, model number LPCII, made by Shaye Communications Limited, British, 1989 – 1991
Telepoint was a cordless telephone system offering some of the features of a mobile telephone but was not sufficiently versatile to be an effective competitor once cellphone technology had become widely affordable. On the move, outgoing calls could be made when in the vicinity of a base station but incoming calls could not be received in the same way as the system did not feature handset tracking. This Forum handset was used with at least three of the four competing Telepoint companies’ networks between 1989 and 1993. As well as the handset, its battery charger, home base station and some supporting documents are also included. These make for an attractive and meaningful acquisition.
