The GSMK CryptoPhone 500 is an Android-based secure mobile phone that provides full end-to-end voice and message encryption, based on a propriety system developed by Gesellschaft fuer Sichere Mobile Kommunikation mbH (GSMK), a Berlin-based company in the field of mobile voice and message security.
Secure telephones have been around since the 1970s and secure mobile telephones since the 1990s but were previously the preserve of governments, the military, and the intelligence services. This commercial product is available (at a price of $3,500) for business and personal customers with sales significantly increased in the aftermath of the Edward Snowden releases in 2013. As of 2014, there were nearly 100,000 of the CryptoPhone 500 handsets in use worldwide.
