Prometheus Traction Splint™ composing pole, ankle hitch, lower leg strap, lower thigh strap (fitted to pole), upper thigh strap and carry bag, for use with people with a suspected limb fracture, developed and manufactured by Prometheus Medical Limited, 2015

The Prometheus Traction Splint ™ is a modern version of Victorian innovation, the Thomas splint. Developed by orthopaedic surgeon, Hugh Owen Thomas (1834-93), the splint was introduced by his nephew Robert Jones to the medical services of the First World War. The use reduced deaths caused by bleeding from compound fractures of the leg from 80% to 20%. Lightweight and collapsible, this leg splint is far more portable than its First World War counterpart but fulfils essentially the same task in ensuring that broken limbs are stable and secure.
