An engraving published in 'Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper' on 13 February, 1858, depicting a photographic portrait of a man as it would appear before the photographer had retouched the negative to improve the appearance of the sitter. This engraving was contrasted with a 'retouched' version to show the dramatic changes which could be effected by a skilled artist.
