Dräger 8000 IC neonatal incubator by Dräger Medical GmbH, Lübeck, Germany, 1994.
This neonatal incubator maintained a controlled environment for sick and premature babies from 24 weeks gestation upwards by regulating air temperature, relative humidity, and oxygen concentration at uniform levels. It was used for 23 years on the Neonatal Unit at St Helier Hospital, Carshalton, UK from 22 February 1994 until October 2016. Approximately 25-30 babies per year were nursed in this unit; a total of more than 600.
Six hand ports provide physical access to the baby for clinicians and parents whilst minimising disruption to the environmental controls. The unit includes mounts for monitoring and ventilation equipment, a hierarchical system of alarms that signify faults in order of importance and a swivel cupboard with trays for the storage of small items relating to the baby’s care.
