Sculpture by Cornelia Parker entitled 'The Negative of Glory', 1999, comprising a mass of shavings of glowing waste metal produced in the process of medal-making.
This piece was commissioned by the Science Museum when Parker acted as artist in residence in 1999. She produced a series of interventions dispersed throughout the museum galleries called 'Another day spent'. This surviving sculpture was displayed in the 'Challenge of Materials' gallery until 2019. It exemplifies Parker's subtle approach to her interventions, which used residues and traces of objects to draw attention to their material properties and the skill and process of working with materials. 'My work is all about the potential of materials - even when it looks like they've lost all possibilities,' she told the Guardian in 1999.
