Zoetrope strip: 'Sairy Defends Her Pattens'

Zoetrope strip entitled 'Sairy Defends Her Pattens' by the London Stereoscopic and Photographic Company.

A zoetrope strip is a strip of paper with a sequence of printed drawings representing a scene in motion which sits inside a the drum of a zoetrope. When the drum is rotated, the images provide a loop of continuous motion. Pattens are protective overshoes that were worn from the Middle Ages until the early 20th century. They were worn outdoors over a normal shoe, had a wooden or later wood and metal sole, and were held in place by leather or cloth bands. Pattens functioned to elevate the foot above the mud and dirt of the street, in a period when road and urban paving was minimal.
