Zoetrope strip entitled 'A Horse Laugh' by the London Stereoscopic and Photographic Company.

A zoetrope strip is a strip of paper with a sequence of printed drawings representing a scene in motion which sits inside a the drum of a zoetrope. When the drum is rotated, the images provide a loop of continuous motion.

The figure in this strip woudl appear to be taking part in a guring contest. In traditional gurning competitions the competitors wear a horse collar around their neck whilst pulling a series of grotesque faces - the most horrific wins. Also, a horse laugh is a term for loud or coarse laughter.
