The metal plate surface for a printing block, with the engraved map of parts of Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) and South Africa.

In 1895, the area of southern Africa formerly known as Zambesia was named “Southern Rhodesia” after the British coloniser and imperialist Cecil Rhodes, who had seized vast territories in southern Africa and supported apartheid policies. Southern Rhodesia (later known as Rhodesia) gained independence in 1980 and changed its name to Zimbabwe.
