Badge declaring ‘Champ: I eat Holsum Bread with Vitamin D’ advertising vitamin D fortified bread, made by W.E. Long Company, Chicago
This badge advertised Holsum bread, a product that was fortified with Vitamin D in order to supplement diets with an insufficient Vitamin D intake. After it was discovered that Vitamin D could be added to foods in 1924, Britain and the United States began to fortify food, drinks, and toiletries. These products were found to be beneficial in the treatment of vitamin deficiency diseases such as rickets.
