Tool for making sundials, unknown maker, France, 1680-1700.

This tool was made and used in the workshop of a sundial maker in France. It was used to measure the angle of incline of exterior walls for which sundials were being made. To function accurately, sundials that were fixed to external walls needed to be calibrated to account for the slightest incline.
