PullClean sanitising door handle, with packaging, made by Altitude Medical and the Agency of Design, UK, 2016

Inside this door handle is a place for dispensing hand sanitiser, replacing two separate actions – cleaning hands and opening a door. The aim was to make the behaviour of cleaning hands an automatic action. The PullClean can attach to any pull door, with 420 doses of hand sanitister in each refill cartridge.

The concept was developed by Jake McKnight, after an original idea from Jake’s friend Alex Oshmyanksy, who was working as junior doctor and also studying statistics. Pullclean also has a monitoring system, CountClean, recording the number of times the handle is touched, relative to the number of times sanitiser is dispensed. Jake’s research showed that people did not like automated dispensers as they were too slow – sanitiser often ended up on the floor or not used.

McKnight worked with students studying the Industrial Design course at the Royal College of Art to explore the idea, develop initial concepts and file a series of patents. They evertually launched a company called Altitude Medical to further develop their device.
