Memorabilia collected by Alan Ramage, includes rare documents relating to Flying Scotsman’s runs in the 1960s when it was first preserved and a set of photocopies of newspaper cuttings relating to the non-stop run.

Alan Ramage (1943 – 2016) was a footplate trainee in the 1950’s at ‘Top Shed’ Kings’ Cross, and a volunteer at the Ffestiniog Railway (FR) from age 16. Because of the latter association he became a member of the small clique that assisted with Flying Scotsman in the ‘Pegler’ era (Alan Pegler was the Chairman of the FR). Hence Alan was one of the firemen on the May 1968 non-stop run (the very last long-distance non-stop run with steam). On arrival at Edinburgh he was one of the ‘guests of honour’ at the celebratory banquet attended by the Lord Provost. In the 1960’s Alan was offered a job on the Bluebell Railway, but didn’t take it, preferring to stay on British Railways. He eventually moved from the Eastern Region to the Southern at Streatham Hill. After five years he moved to Waterloo where he swiftly moved up the ranks to the No.1 link – the Exeter and Weymouth trains. When he retired from the railway he didn’t take part in the gatherings of old ‘Top Shed’ men and only came forward when a friend noticed that the National Railway Museum were looking for those who had been associated with Flying Scotsman in the 1960’s.

All of this material would be of interest to anyone wanting to know more about the Flying Scotsman when it was first preserved. The material has been listed and is available electronically.
