Souvenir bottle with water from Fatima, Portugal, maker not marked, possibly Portuguese, 2017
The water held in this bottle comes from the fountains at Fatima, Portugal. In 1917, apparitions of the Virgin Mary appeared to three children in Fatima. The Marian visions led to thousands of Catholic pilgrims visiting the area to pray. Shortly after the apparitions began, spring waters were discovered in Fatima. Previously, Fatima had been a dry area of arid countryside, so the springs were considered a miracle. The waters of Fatima are now sold in souvenir bottles for pilgrims to take home. They are used for prayer, devotion and healing.
