Oak funeral bier donated to the parish of Shrivenham by Rear Admiral Sir Charles Dury in memory of his late wife Frances Ellen Whitehead, possibly by Lyne & Sons Carriage Makers, Stratford-on-Avon, England, 1900.

Rear-Admiral Drury donated this funeral carriage (bier) to Shrivenham parish, Oxfordshire in 1900 in memory of his late wife Frances Whitehead. Used to wheel coffins to burial in the local area, local recollections of the bier’s rare canopy are it was only used when raining but it may have also been designed to be decorated with flowers.

Hand-drawn funeral biers ranged from basic wooden hand-carts to ornate ceremonial examples, reflecting the diversity of experiences and commemoration around death, mortality, and spiritual beliefs in the Victorian Age.
