The Conet Project explores the phenomenon of ‘numbers stations’ – regular, repeated short-wave radio broadcasts which comprise only lists of formatted numbers, sometimes accompanied by short bursts of music or other sounds. The origins and purpose of these broadcasts is the subject of great speculation amongst radio enthusiasts and conspiracy theorists. Historically, they are thought by many to have been encoded broadcasts for communication with secret agents during the Cold War, but here is wider speculation about contemporary broadcasts.
