Looking inside the body is key to many diagnostic and screening procedures. Most commonly, this is done using an endoscopy, which involves a thin, flexible camera being inserted into the body through an opening like the mouth or bottom.

The endoscopy capsule offers a minimally invasive alternative to the traditional procedure. The patient swallows capsule containing the camera which has a wide-angle view allowing nearly 360° coverage of the colon. It takes about 30,000 pictures before passing naturally from the body, which usually occurs before the end of its 10-hour battery life. During capsule endoscopy a patient is required to wear this belt which contains sensors. Sometimes the sensors are directly applied on the patient's skin. The belt allows the PillCam to wirelessly transmit the images taken of the patient's colon to a monitor. The first generation of PillCam was introduced to the market in 2001.
