We Care Solar Suitcase, by We Care Solar, 2017. A solar electric system which fits into a robust and portable suitcase, designed to bring power to healthcare facilities in remote areas of the world that have no access, or intermittent access, to electricity.
The kit contains two 20-watt solar panels, two high efficiency LED lamps, a 14 amp-hour lithium ferrous phosphate battery, a 15A charge controller, two rechargeable LED headlamps, a phone charger and a foetal doppler for detecting a baby's heart rate. For clinic installations, the yellow case becomes a cabinet that mounts to the wall, and the solar panels can be secured to the roof.
The Solar Suitcase is aimed to help save lives by giving these remote facilities reliable, clean, bright lights for night time obstetric and surgical procedures, as well as power for mobile phones and basic medical devices. Developed in 2009, over two thousand systems have now been installed in over twenty countries around the world – most recently, thirty-five were installed in Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria (a category 5 hurricane lasting from 16 September – 3 October 2017).
