Access to clean drinking water and the safe disposal of human waste are crucial for a healthy community. This is almost impossible to achieve in city slums with poor or nonexistent sanitation.
Across much of Britain in the 1800s, water and waste systems overlapped dangerously. People were filling their kettles from sources into which others had tipped excrement from their chamberpots. The spread of disease and death was inevitable.
