Skin cancer teaching model illustrating three types of cancerous skin conditions and three types of non cancerous skin conditions, consisting of a circular model, double sided identification card and white plastic base with mount for model and card, made by GPI Anatomicals, 2008

Models like this one help diagnose different types of skin cancer, including the most dangerous form, malignant melanoma. However, this model, like many others only shows what skin cancer looks like on light skin tones. Skin cancers are more common in people with light skin as they have less of the protective pigment called melanin. However skin cancers affect everyone and can appear differently on different skin tones.
