1:32 scale model of a 1960s tool room containing around 80 machines. The model was created in the 1960s. The machine models were provided by Visual Planning Systems Ltd., who produced models for factory planning. Additional details were added in-house by the Science Museum Workshop.

This 1960s tool room model contains machines including lathes, drilling machines, grinding machines, jig borers, milling machines, fly presses, a precision honing machine, bench hardness testers and an overhead crane amongst many others. It is based around the layout of the ‘Vactric Precision Tools Ltd.’ workshop, although it is not a direct copy. Vactric Precision Tools Ltd. was described in communication about the planning of this model as “the best equipped toolroom in London”. There is a room for grinding machines as well as a separate, temperature-controlled room for the jig boring machines. The workshop also features a room containing heat treatment equipment and an inspection room. This model provides an invaluable insight into the layout and contents of a 1960s tool room, reflecting production processes of the time.

The model itself was designed to sit alongside 1927-1051, a model of a 19th Century toolroom. Both contain similar types of machinery and reflect the development of tool making workshops over time.
