This porcelain table was used between 1982 and 2018 in the mortuary at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton, Somerset, by pathologists and technicians to conduct post-mortem examinations to determine cause of death. Made by Armitage Shanks, famous for manufacturing sinks and sanitary ware, this table has raised edges and slopes so that body fluids are channelled to a waste drain. The table’s smooth ceramic surface meant it could be easily cleaned keeping it hygienic and safe for the pathologists working with it.
