WDT66N Combus Packet Line Card, developed by Ferranti Ltd., Wythenshawe, Manchester, 1973-1975, installed in an Argus 700E for the Post Office Experimental Packet Switching System (EPSS)

In 1977 the British Post Office launched the first public packet switching network in the world, the Experimental Packet Switching System (EPSS). The EPSS was an important system at a point of global interest in, and development of, data communication networks. Ferranti Ltd won the contract for the EPSS control computers and developed the hardware. This WDT66N Combus Packet Line Card was part of the system and contained the state engines which coded and decoded the data in the incoming and outgoing packets.
