Sharp J-SH04 mobile telephone, 2001

Sharp J-SH04 mobile phone, by the Sharp Corporation, Japan, 2001

Sharp J-SH04 mobile phone, manufactured by the Sharp Corporation, Japan, 2001.

Sharp’s J-SH04, released in Japan in 2001, was the first mobile phone to have a fully integrated camera, enabling users to send pictures to other users over the mobile network. Sharp were unsure whether the camera would prove popular, but the phone sold very rapidly, dramatically outselling a phone that was exactly similar except that it did not feature the camera. The novelty of the J-SH04’s camera made it popular despite the pictures that it took being of poor quality.
