workers' housing bricks

Workers' housing bricks. Part of a group of 80 crates of bricks and fixings from two sets of workers' housing, acquired in 1984 and 1990 with the intention of reconstructing these houses on or near the museum site.

The material acquired in 1984 came from two eighteenth-century workers' houses, known as 36 and 38 Dean Street. The dismantling of these houses was recorded at the time and each brick was numbered as it was removed from the houses. Other material from these houses included wooden materials and fixtures such as fireplaces. In 2012, the wooden timbers from this acquisition were removed due to them being in poor condition.

The material acquired in 1990 came from a row of back-to-back workers' houses from the 1820s, known as Walker’s buildings. The dismantling of these houses was not recorded to the same extent and the bricks are not numbered.

It is now not wholly clear which acquisition of workers housing each crate of material belong to and it is possible that each crate contains a combination of the two sets of workers' housing material. As the Dean Street bricks were numbered in green paint, it should be possible to determine what material belongs to each set upon unpacking to some extent, although the paint on the bricks is flaking in places so this may not be a failsafe method.

This crate contains examples of bricks with the green painted numbers of the Dean Street houses.
