Sony tablet computer, 'Tablet S', made by Sony, China, 2012.
Launched in 2011, the Tablet S was electronics manufacturer Sony’s first tablet computing device. In the 2010s tablet computers gained popularity very quickly following the launch of Apple’s very successful iPad in 2010. Many mobile phone and electronics manufacturers followed with similar devices. The Sony Tablet S used a variant of the open source ‘Android’ operating system, and targeted users of other Sony products including their range of PlayStation games consoles. The book-like design made Sony’s Tablet S stand out from other competing tablet computers at this time, which typically shared very similar design features.
