WorldSpace WSSR-11 Satellite radio broadcast receiver, by WorldSpace Inc, Maryland, United States, 2003-2007

WorldSpace WSSR-11 Satellite radio broadcast receiver, made by WorldSpace Inc, Maryland, United States, 2003-2007.

WorldSpace was founded in 1990, with the aim to provide satellite radio services in Asia and Africa, and later in Latin America and the Caribbean. The WorldSpace Foundation, founded in 1997, was a separate non-profit arm of the organisation which was granted 5% of the company's satellite capacity to deliver social development and educational programs. Special radio receivers like this example could receive the WorldSpace broadcasts. The service proved less popular than hoped, possibly due to the massive coverage achieved by each satellite meaning that targeted broadcasts were difficult to achieve. The company filed for bankruptcy in October 2008, and their radio stations went offline in December 2009.
