Coin, silver. Testone of Alfonso d'Este, Duke of Ferrara (1505-1534). Attributed to Francesco Raibolini, called Il Francia (b. 1450; d. 1518). Obv. ALFONSVS. DVX· FERRARIAE . III. Bust to left, hair long and wearing cuirass. Rev. DE. FORTI · DVLCEDO. Seated figure of Samson wearing a helmet; in his right hand he holds a lion's head, from the mouth of which bees are issuing; to left a tree stump around which a serpent is coiled. Wt. 151 grains. Bought, £6 10s. V&A no. 358–1907.
