Receipt book for the Theatre Royal Picture House, Manningham Lane, Bradford, covering the period April 1946 to March 1957.

The Theatre Royal on Manningham Lane, Bradford originally opened as the Alexandra Theatre on Monday 26 December 1864 and could accommodate around 1,800 people. Actors such as Sir Henry Irving and Ellen Terry appeared here, and it was at the Theatre Royal that Sir Henry Irving made his final appearance in 1905, prior to his death at Bradford’s Midland Hotel.

The Theatre had been showing films as part of its programme as early as the late 1890s and in early 1921 it was closed as a live Theatre and was converted for full time Cinema use. The Cinema opened as the Theatre Royal Picture House on 5 December 1921. In 1965, the Theatre Royal Picture House was refurbished and put up for sale, it was re-named Irving Royal Cinema, re-opening on 27 February 1967. The London based Classic Cinemas chain took over on 19 October 1967, and it was re-named Classic Royal Cinema. It finally closed on 16 November 1974 with the final screening, The Graduate.
