The 'mungo and shoddy' trade bought much prosperity to Batley and Dewsbury and the Spen Valley for a hundred and fifty years after 1810. Shoddy is the remnants of soft woollen materials such as flannels and blankets, whereas mungo is the more superior type of woollen cloths. By mixing the two the industry can produce a thick, warm but not very durable cloth. Here this cylindrical machine armed with sharp cutting teeth is cutting woollen jackets into rags.
