Gelatine silver print entitled 'Weaver's Cottage at Golcar' by Ian Beesley. Signed in pencil on the back. Produced for the commission 'Through the Mill: The Story of Yorkshire Wool in Photographs', 1985-1987.
In spite of the appearance of the loomshop (1790s) and, soon after, the factory, much of West Yorkshire's woollen cloth continued to be made up in the weavers' homes until well into the nineteenth century. The West Yorkshire landscape is well known for its weavers' cottage; often terraced rows of two or three storey houses, identified by their numerous long mullioned loomshop windows like these at Golcar which were built into the hillside and where the work area had a separate access (at the rear) on the second floor.
