Gelatine silver print entitled 'Lumb Mill Chimney, Hebden Bridge' by Ian Beesley. Produced for the commission `Through the Mill:, The Story of Yorkshire Wool in Photographs'. 1985-1987'.
The replacement of water power by steam engines came gradually to different branches of the woollen and worsted industries. Those areas not blessed with their own supplies of coal or good transport systems were slow to take up steam power but even here in the remote Calder valley water-power at Lumb and Bob mills gave way to steam power after 1860 and the mill chimney became a feature of the Pennine countryside.
