Albert Street, Saltaire

Following erection of Salts' mill, attention turned to the building of workpeople's cottages. When the scheme was completed in 1871 there were 22 streets of 850 houses plus 45 almshouses for the elderly. Albert Street, locally known as 't' Railway Bottom', was the northern boundary of the residential quarter of the village. Each cottage is stone built, lined with brick, and originally had a parlour, kitchen, pantry and two, three or four bedrooms depending on the individual family needs.
