Under the monastic rule after 1130 much poor land in West Yorkshire was brought back into cultivation, forests cleared, marshes drained and roads built. The Cistercian abbey at Fountains, 2.5 miles west of Ripon, is thought to be the finest of Yorkshire's monastic houses. It was founded in 1132 by thirteen monks from St Mary's Abbey in York. Like most orders, the Cistercians soon came to have an interest in trade despite their supposed ascetic way of life.
