Vinyl record entitled ‘Family Planning: a recorded talk between Nurse Drew and a family doctor’, with accompanying letter and leaflet providing family planning information about the spermicide Genexol, made and sent by W.J. Rendell Ltd, United Kingdom, dated 1963.
The 1960s were a time of changing attitudes towards sex and contraception. The contraceptive pill was introduced in the UK in 1961, but other forms of contraceptives remained popular. This record, leaflet and letter show how one company, W. J. Rendell, tried to inform customers and market their products. In this information pack, which a potential customer requested in 1963, the company are advertising their spermicide pessaries, Genexol. These were tablets which were inserted into the vagina to kill sperm before it could reach an egg. W. J. Rendell developed some of the first commercial spermicide pessaries in 1885, with ingredients like quinine and cocoa butter.
