Print of a monochrome engraving, after Bartolomeo Pinelli (1781 - 1835), 'La Lanterna Magica'.

The image is actually of a Peepshow being enjoyed by members of the public rather than a magic lantern. The Peepshow box is an early example of itinerant optical entertainment which used optical illusion and showmanship to enthral audiences.

Bartolomeo Pinelli (1781 – 1835) was an Italian illustrator and engraver, his illustrations depicted the costumes of the Italian people, the great epic poems and numerous other subjects, including popular customs
