A 19th century brass chinese shadow ball, the bird and fauna engraved ball enclosing a gimballed oil lamp which remains upright and casts a shadows across the wall of a darkened room when rolled or rotated.

Shadow shows have been used for centuries in coutnries such as China, India and Indonesia. In addition, some simple devices for projecting shadows were manufactured including this Chinese perforated metal ball - the shadow ball. The intricate design that makes up the exterior of the ball, throws patterns on the wall upright when the ball is rolled. It contains a wick inside which is lit to provide the illumination, the light source is kept upright by a gimball in the centre.
