Recording their decision by post or online, people could opt-in to become an organ donor and make their wishes known by carrying a card saying ‘Yes, I donate’. On 20 May 2020, England changed to an opt-out system, known as Max and Keira’s law. The legislation is named after a boy who received a heart transplant and the girl who donated it. Under this law, all adults in England agree to become organ donors when they die, unless they opt-out or are have a specific health condition. However, people’s next of kin are still involved in any conversations so knowing what their loved ones wanted is important. The change in law is to hoped to improve the numbers of potential organ donors for those waiting on transplant lists.
