‘Alexa, tell me a joke.’ The speaker constantly analysed nearby sounds to pick out instructions given to Alexa, the name of the speaker’s web-based virtual assistant.
In the 2010s the huge global companies Apple, Google and Amazon each launched smart speakers, marking a step change in voice-controlled media technology. We could walk into a room with a smart speaker and ask it to tell us our schedule for the day, what the weather forecast was or to play our favourite music.
