Capsules of vitamin D standards in methanol solution stored in plastic box, inscribed 'Firas 2016'.
In 2014 Charlotta Turner, a Swedish professor in analytical chemistry, hired mercenaries to save the life of her Iraqi PhD student, Firas Jumaah, after he was trapped in an Islamic State warzone. These samples of vitamin D standards were used in Jumaah’s research after the dramatic rescue mission, which made international news.
This project involved the separation of Vitamin D compounds using ‘green’ supercritical fluid chromatography, contributing to our understanding of the effect of vitamin D on the body.
