Thesis, PhD thesis, 'Extraction and Chromatographic Separation of Lipids and Lipid-Like Compounds Using Compressed Carbon Dioxide as a Solvent', by Firas Jumaah, Lund University, Sweden, 2016.
In 2014 Charlotta Turner, a Swedish professor in analytical chemistry, hired mercenaries to save the life of her Iraqi PhD student, Firas Jumaah, after he was trapped in an Islamic State warzone. Two years later, Jumaah completed his PhD under Turner at Lund University. His research employed environmentally 'green' chemical methods of nutrient extraction.
After the rescue, Turner recalled her student was changed, and extremely motivated in his work. In her own personal copy of his PhD thesis, Jumaah had written 'thank you for saving my life'.
