NG DetecTool, a rapid diagnostic test

Made:
2019 in France

Prototype of the NG DetecTool, a diagnostic tool used to detect Extended Spectrum Beta Lactamase, enzymes that confer resistance to most beta-lactam antibiotics, consisting of sample processing unit, beta lactamase detector and plastic syringe barrel, developed by Commissariat à l'énergie atomique et aux énergies alternatives (The French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission) in collaboration with Assistance Publique – Hôpitaux de Paris, Barcelona Institute for Global health, IESE Business School, NG Biotech, Semmelweiss University (Hungary), and the University of Barcelona, manufactured by NG Biotech, France, 2019

Using technology like a pregnancy test, the NG DetecTool consists of a combined sample preparation and detection unit, housed in a 3D printed single use device. Test lines indicate the presence of two specific enzymes responsible for antimicrobial resistance – ESBL (Extended Spectrum Beta Lactamase) and carbapenemases. Traditional tests of this type take 16-32 hours. The NG DetecTool takes 20 to 30 minutes using urine, blood and rectal samples. Blood and rectal samples need preparation before testing.

The multinational team worked together over the course of 2018 funded by EIT Health (European Institute for Innovation and Technology). Antimicrobial resistance causes 25,000 deaths in the EU per year. The extra costs associated with the treatment of these infections are estimated at 1,500 million euros. One way of preventing unnecessary use of antibiotics is through rapid tests used in clinics and hospitals to help make staff make decisions.
