Photograph showing four different facial expressions by A Spurge as he is winking. This was an experiment in analysing motion taken about 1886. Such images were projected using a lantern designed by John Arthur Roebuck Rudge (1837-1903), whihc had four lenses with a revolving shutter to reveal each of the images in sequence.
