Concrete Unit Recovered from Welbeck Street Car Park

Made:
1968-71 in England

Triangular precast concrete unit made by Atlas Stone Co. Ltd, from Welbeck Street car park, designed by Michael Blampied & Partners and structural engineers John de Bremaeker & Partners, London, 1968-1971.

This concrete unit stands as a physical reminder of the wholesale transformation of the urban landscape brought about by the motor car. Car parks, in general, are key components of the infrastructure of transport and automotive mobility. The concrete unit from Welbeck Street car park, in particular, represents all this, but also speaks for the relationship between technology, technological systems and the built environment.
