Designed to be used by clinicians at the point of care, the Attomarker device is a multi-biomarker blood analysis device which can be used with an iPhone to give results in 5 minutes. The iPhone camera records a video of the chip sensor surface. Each fob contains gold nanoparticles that scatter light – different spots are for different tests. The brighter spots contain positive results which the iPhone interprets, quantities and transmits the results to a cloud management system. Results can be used to trace infections across geographical areas. The Attomarker is in development to be used for tests for diabetes, allergies, tuberculosis, HIV, antimicrobial resistance and COVID-19.

Developed over 12 years by a spin out company from the University of Exeter by Attomarker Ltd and drawing on the expertise of software, smartphone application, microfluid and data security specialists, the device is one of the potential entries for the Longitude Prize. The Prize is a £8m fund for a diagnostic test that will be accurate, rapid, affordable and easy to use anywhere in the world to ensure that antibiotics are used responsibly in the face of growing antibiotic resistance.
