Organ transplant box used for transporting kidneys, heart valves and pancreases, used by NHS Blood and Transplant services, 2016-2018
Organ donors and their families represent the first steps in the transplant process. In England under opt-out scheme for organ donation, next of kin ultimately make the final decision on behalf of their loved one. The decision to donate organs after a person’s death starts a chain of events that leads to a recipient having a transplant. One of the crucial stages is the transport between donor and recipient hospitals. Organs are only viable for a matter of hours, so it is often in a race against time. Specially designed boxes filled with ice are used to transport bagged organs in emergency transport.
