No. 7050 is one of the first diesels to see regular use on Britain’s railways. It was one of nine prototypes ordered by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway in 1934 to test the concept of shunting with diesel locomotives.
This shunter was once named after ‘Rorke’s Drift’, a famous battle in the Anglo-Zulu War, fought in present-day South Africa. Many vehicles that were used by the military were named this way.
