Made:
April 1951

Silver gelatin print by Erich Auerbach, dated April 1951. Image titled "Sir Malcolm Sergeant [sic]". Picture no. 5 in a sequence published in Illustrated magazine in May 1951.

Caption on verso reads: "The man who took Toscanini's place at the head of the list of Festival Conductors at the Festival Hall is not only a master of music but a master of words. He can conduct an after-dinner conversation as skilfully as a symphony. The hands that draw the best out of an orchestra gesticulate to fascinate his listeners. Sir Malcolm [Sargent] was once a choirboy; and there is still a good deal of the choirboy in him -- radiant, polite, discreetly assertive, extremely clever choirboy whom there is not holding down or keeping back".
