Is Oxford Worth It?

Made:
October 1951 in Oxford

Silver gelatin print by Erich Auerbach, dated October 1951. Image titled "Is Oxford Worth it?", shows two students during a dance lesson at the university. Published in Illustrated magazine in November 1951.

Caption on verso reads: "No one ever seems to be doing any work. Serious undergraduates could, surely, acquire knowledge half the time and at a fraction of the cost, at a Polytechnic. Rightly or wrongly, Oxford's purpose is to give its young three wonderful years of study, spiritual illumination, and a sense of gracious living. If we are to believe the Jeremiahs, it is in danger of reverting to its Medieval state when impecunious students rifled each others premises for bread. Only today, for bread, read bicycles."
