Mercurial pressure gauge from beam engine built in 1808 by Boulton Watt and Co., for Reid's brewery, Clerkenwell, London

This steam gauge was attached to the cylinder jacket of a rotative beam engine supplied by Messrs. Boulton, Watt & Co., in 1808, to Messrs. Reid's brewery, Clerkenwell, where the boiler pressure was 5 lb. above atmosphere. This gauge represents the arrangement in general use till about 1850, when the continual increase in pressure led to the adoption of dial gauges.
